27 Jul 04 / the history of sampling

info vis

Here's a long overdue post: my final project for Information Visualization as a Mode of Art Practice.

This interactive visualization is my approach to visualizing the complex relationships between musicians who are sampled, and the musicians who sample them. It shows the larger patterns of sampling over time, and also allows for investigation regarding specific artists, albums, and songs.

The current version displays albums over time, with the sampled artists on the lower half, and the sampling artists on the upper half.

As with most things I do these days, this is a work in progress. In particular, I'm hoping to make the interface a bit more clear in future versions. I'd greatly appreciate any feedback you may have. Also, I should warn you that it takes a while to load. There's a lot of data in there. And yes -- this, too, was built with Processing (thanks again to fry and REAS).
